Chocolat Cremerie brings casual Italian flavor to the Gaslamp
While in the Gaslamp Quarter last weekend, my sweet tooth was aching for something rich, flavorful and delicious. Thankfully, Chocolat Cremerie was just around the corner (literally) and was calling my name.
The gelato lounge opened its doors on Fifth Avenue in September and seems to already be a hotspot. When I went, Chocolat Cremerie was packed with people, each enjoying something different. Its success may be due to the location, but I have a feeling it’s the flavorful dishes that keep people satisfied.
With so much to choose from, the pickiest of eaters can find something to enjoy. The menu includes salads, bruschetta, Carpaccio, grilled panini, crêpes and other dishes, such as steak tartare. But be sure to save room for dessert because with tiramisu, crème brulée, praline hazelnut cake and sweet crêpes with Nutella, you won’t want to miss out.
The crêpes looked amazing, but I really wanted the gelato. There were so many flavors, such as white chocolat, hazelnut, strawberries, stracciatella, tiramisu, pistachio, and spicy chocolat, that I couldn’t decide. I asked the employee what he would recommend if I wanted something fruity with a touch of vanilla, and viola! The cherry vanilla gelato was a delectable answer. Each bite was packed with rich cream and a hint of cherry. While I was there, I also sampled another flavor. Chocolat uses six tons of cocoa per year, so it’s no surprise that the milk chocolat gelato was bursting with, well, chocolate flavor.
The dishes were reasonably priced, but the gelato was a little expensive. A small cup or sugar cone is $4.95, but the flavors are so rich and sweet that a small is all you need, and is definitely worth it. Careful though, too much of their chocolate gelato will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, it may also actually give you a toothache!
