Oompah-Pah!

When it comes to Oktoberfest, the heartier the better: Sausages should be colossal, polka had better be pulverizing, and the beer——well, it should flow into tankards in mighty torrents. So when you choose to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, why celebrate anywhere other than the La Mesa Oktoberfest (October 5-7), the county’s peerless purveyor of Bavarian-theme beer gulping? Featuring the Oktoberfest standards of beer, bratwurst and live oompah-pah music, the festival won’t so much surprise as pleasantly overwhelm——kind of like that fourth helping of cheese noodles. Ride the trolley to La Mesa Blvd. (Date Ave. to Fourth St.), where you’ll find more than 400 booths selling art, crafts and food, and a nearby parking garage transformed into a beer garden. If you’re feeling inspired by the costumed folk dancers, or if the live music puts you in the mood, a dance floor is available to rhythmically exorcise any lederhosen-clad spirits. Hours: 11-11 Fri. (beer garden opens at 5). 11-11 Sat. (beer garden opens at noon) and noon-6 Sun. (beer garden opens at noon). More information: 619-440-6161 or eastcountychamber.org/event_oktoberfest.html.
