BOOKSHELF

Wordplay and the Bay

When you think about what’s really important in life, proper punctuation probably isn’t at the top of your list. Then again, if you are Richard Lederer or John Shore——San Diego writers and self-described “language humorists”——it might be. In Comma Sense: A Fun-Damental Guide to Punctuation (St. Martin’s Griffin, $9.95), Lederer and Shore link punctuation with power. “If you don’t understand punctuation, you can’t write right. And if you can’t write right, you can’t positively influence so much of what’s critical to your life,” they tell readers in the book’s introduction. Indeed, Comma Sense is a no-nonsense, humorous and helpful guide to periods, question marks, commas and the like.

Students at High Tech High School in Point Loma——with assistance from California Sea Grant, a program based at Scripps that sponsors research into coastal and marine resources, together with the Unified Port of San Diego——have published the third in an ongoing series about San Diego Bay. San Diego Bay: A Story of Exploitation and Restoration (at the San Diego Maritime Museum, $24.95) is a well-researched history (with photographs and illustrations) of the bay and its uses and exploitation by local residents——from early Native American settlers to modern-day San Diegans. The book was researched, written, photographed and designed by 64 11thgrade students.
