3D Robotics

EST. 2009

What began as a drone startup co-founded by then 22-year-old Tijuana native Jordi Munoz has become the largest commercial drone manufacturer in North America. Its GoPro attachment feature has made it a favorite among hobbyists and pros alike.

Rusty Surfboards

EST. 1985

​Born-and-bred San Diegan Rusty Preisendorfer shaped his first board in 1969 as a grom attending La Jolla High. He went on to create one of the most successful surf companies in the world and has shaped boards for pros like Josh Kerr. Surf’s up!

WD-40

EST. 1953

​It took the brand 40 tries before perfecting its rust solvent. The aptly named WD-40 is now a household fix-it-all curing squeaky hinges around the world.

Chuao Chocolatier

EST. 2002

​Known for off-beat flavors (see below), the brand was started by two Venezuelan brothers who opened their first shop in Encinitas. They’ve since secured sweet deals with retailers like Whole Foods, Ralph’s, and Sur La Table.

EST. 2008

​The e-waste recycling ATM buys used electronics from customers and offers cash or store credit in return. Be green, get green!

Sector 9 

EST. 1993

​The skateboard, longboard, clothing, and accessory line got its start in a La Jolla backyard and joined the big leagues when Billabong bought the company in 2008.
