Get out of the house, let your troubles drift away at San Diego's many eateries

Celebrate Life

A WHOLE LOT OF MALARKEY

Although the economy is reducing like an unattended balsamic reduction on a high flame in a thin-bottomed pot, don’t let it scorch you and your mood. San Diego is home to some of the finest restaurants in the world, with so many great, innovative, creative, talented chefs. Now is the time to embrace and nurture our local culinary economy. I’m not suggesting that you go out and eat caviar and drink big Bordeauxs. I’m suggesting you get out of your mortgage-strapped home and let your troubles drift away with some of the great bargains many of our local eateries are offering.

I’ve been talking to chefs all throughout the county and more and more of us are offering affordable coursed-out menus with moderately priced wine pairings. At least go sit at the bar during happy hour and let your laughter fill the room so that the tourists and conventioneers know that no matter what, San Diego is “the” place to be. It’s going to take all of us working together to make it through this burnt-over reduced balsamic sludge we’re smelling.

We have another local chef representing San Diego on the Emmy-nominated reality cooking show, Top Chef. The former executive sous chef of Confidential and, as of yesterday, the new executive chef, Richard, will take on some of the country’s young and up-and-coming chefs of the future in NYC in season 5. Best of luck to my neighbor up the street. “Make San Diego proud.”

Let me let you in on a little secret: Halloween weekend is one of the slowest weekends for the restaurant business. Most guests are scared to come out and see all of the ghosts and goblins. The truth is it’s a great opportunity to get a great seat and watch the fashion show of San Diego’s sexiest and scantily clad revelers. Come on out and have a great time, and be sure to eat plenty of garlic.

Be sure to write in any questions or breaking news in the San Diego dining scene. Until next week … Cheers and be safe!

I really like your postive attitude. A list of Happy Hour reccomendations would be appreciated. Also, where do you reccomend buying fresh but inexpensive seafood. I like Whole Foods becasue it's fresh, but not always cheap. Any reccomnedations would be appreciated.

Brian: You must have some tips for Confidential's Rich Sweeney on making the cut on "Top Chef."... What should he watch out for? Will you lend him a hat? And, how did author Salman Rushdie ever score a hot bride like "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi? --RonDon
