BOOKSHELF

Birds of a Feather

In 1985, Stacey O’Brien, a biologist specializing in wild-animal behavior, met a four-day-old baby barn owl suffering from nerve damage in one of its wings. The owl couldn’t survive in the wild, so O’Brien adopted him, named him Wesley, and the pair spent 19 years together until his death. Wesley the Owl: The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl (Free Press, $23) is the story of their life together, and in many ways, it’s a proud parent’s story. O’Brien shares much of what she learned about owls in the years she spent with Wesley and also shows readers what it’s like inside the owl research community. Although O’Brien now lives in Orange County, she spent 11 years in La Costa——with Wesley——and writes about that period, including how she discovered that the owner of her neighborhood coffeehouse, La Costa Coffee Roasters, had barn owls nesting under the roof of his shop. O’Brien has a scientist’s eye for detail, but gives us those details tenderly.

Oceanside writer Tom Kirkbride’s debut young-adult novel is Gamadin: Word of Honor (Emerald Book Company, $21.95). It’s a science-fiction novel focused on two 16-year-old boys, both surfers in Southern California, who wind up rescuing a film star from a capsized yacht. That good deed sends them off on the adventure of their lives, involving a host of otherworldly characters all searching for the galaxy’s most powerful weapon, an ancient Gamadin spaceship known as Millawanda. ——EILENE ZIMMERMAN

I just heard about a great event coming up this weekend in San Diego-- Discover Wine with Robert Mondavi! I'm a huge foodie and super excited to meet Food Network's Ted Allen because he will be doing a live food demo at the Macy's Cooking School on Friday afternoon. I live about 40 minutes away, but plan on making the trip so I can take in his cooking tips and Robert Mondavi Private Selection pairings right in time for Thanksgiving. I think the food demonstration/wine pairing times are listed on the www.discover-wine.com Web site.
