Party For The Palate
THE COLLECTIVE CLAMOR of foodies and wine enthusiasts is bubbling to the surface as the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival returns. The week-long festival (November 14-18) features 160 wineries, 60 fine-dining restaurants, celebrity chef demonstrations, wine dinners, cooking and wine-tasting classes and more. New to this year’s schedule: a Tommy Bahama Rum VIP Party, a luxury champagne and jewelry event dubbed Bling & Bubbly, and the Chef of the Fest competition, in which 60 chefs compete for $50,000 in cash and prizes. War Without End
VETERAN’S DAY (November 11) shouldn’t be the only day when Americans show their support of the men and women who have served their country, say La Jolla businesswomen Kamie Cicinelli and Judith Peters. The pair recently founded Project Boot, a non-partisan group that raises awareness and funds (through the sale of its Boot Bracelet) for soldiers and military personnel injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“There are thousands of casualties of war whose sacrifices did not end with their tour of duty,” says Cicinelli. “We’re talking about men and women who have lost limbs, suffered severe head injuries or are living with post-traumatic stress disorder. There is also a chain of people——parents, spouses, children and friends——who are feeling the devastating effects of the war.”
The Boot Bracelet, a revival of the POW/MIA bracelet worn to remember missing and captured soldiers of the Vietnam War, is imprinted with numbers reflecting the soldiers deployed, the deceased and the injured.
