Every year people come to visit for a few days and end up staying a lifetime when they find out what San Diego has to offer. Sure, the weather is perfect. Everyone knows its Mediterranean climate is as near to perfection as you can get. Close to the Pacific Ocean, summer days are cool and winter nights are comfortable.
But San Diego offers so much more than ample sunshine and comfortable coastal living. For the past two decades, San Diego has seen a tremendous boost in its economic engine as the region has grown from a town dependent upon the military and tourism to a diverse, thriving cluster of high-tech industry.
San Diego is the No. 1 center for wireless technology, thanks to such giants as Qualcomm and Nokia. Our biotechnology industry is one of the nations largest and most productive, driven by the research conducted at UCSD and private and public labs located on the Torrey Pines Mesa.
The military is still an important presence, as well. The Space & Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) is headquartered here, and of course the legendary Pacific Fleet is homeported in San Diego Harbor, while Camp Pendleton in Oceanside is a major U.S. Marine base.
San Diego is home to several major universities. San Diego State, a campus of the California State University system, accommodates approximately 30,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The University of San Diego is a beautiful school with architecture that reflects San Diegos history and a law school renowned for its faculty. The University of California, San Diego, with its proximity to the biotech firms in Torrey Pines, has produced scientists and entrepreneurs who have contributed to the area and the world.
It's not only the institutions of higher education that get an A for excellence. San Diego educators are committed to providing the best education possible for students at every level. Charter schools, such as High Tech High, offer students from all over the area a chance to learn in non-traditional environments and to meet challenges that will prepare them for college and beyond.
So welcome to San Diego. And welcome home.
