University of California, San Diego Medical Center

At the University of California, San Diego Medical Center —San Diego’s only academic medical center—some of the brightest medical and scientific minds collaborate to discover breakthroughs that become the standard of disease prevention and patient care throughout the country and the world. Within this unique academic setting, physicians are dedicated researchers, scientists and educators, in addition to providing superb clinical care to patients. In the lab, they discover medical breakthroughs. In the classroom, they train the next generation of doctors. And at the patient’s bedside, they offer the latest, most innovative options. Here, internationally recognized experts work together in teams to solve problems others have considered untreatable.

UCSD’s clinical facilities include two hospitals and multiple specialty and outpatient sites:

  • UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest
  • Thornton Hospital on UCSD’s East Campus
  • Moores UCSD Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute– designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region
  • Shiley Eye Center
  • Outpatient facilities in Hillcrest, on the East Campus and in Scripps Ranch

SPECIALTIES AND RESEARCH

At the world-renowned University of California, San Diego, pioneering faculty are pushing the frontiers of science and medicine forward to create discoveries that will help improve the lives of people in our community and around the world. At UCSD Medical Center, this leads to “bench-to-bedside” medicine, positioning UCSD Medical Center nationally as a leading center for clinical innovation and specialty care.

One of the greatest advantages for patients at UCSD Medical Center is that they’re often first to have access to leading- edge diagnostic techniques and therapies. As part of an elite group of academic medical centers, UCSD can offer its patients the latest drug treatments and promising new procedures and technologies before they’re available elsewhere. Only at an academic medical center such as UCSD can patients find researchers and clinicians working closely together to “translate” the latest advancements directly to the care of patients.

SERVICES

UCSD Medical Center offers a full range of primary and specialty services, including comprehensive cancer care, cardiovascular care, solid organ transplant and bone marrow transplant programs; a regional center for high-risk pregnancy management and infant special care; a Level 1 trauma center and regional burn center; and the General Clinical Research Center, where patients have access to a variety of promising new therapies. UCSD also offers centers of excellence dedicated to treating stroke, orthopedic and muscular injuries and conditions, and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
