Children's Hospital & Health Center

Since Childrens Hospital first opened its doors in 1954, its mission has been to restore, sustain and enhance the health and developmental potential of children through excellence in care, education, research and advocacy. The Childrens Hospital goal is to help create a region where all children go to school healthy and ready to learn how to be productive, responsible citizens. Todays children are tomorrows leaders.

Quality pediatric care requires specialized training and a special sensitivity that is perfected through caring for children 100 percent of the time. Childrens Hospitals specially qualified clinical staff and affiliated physicians provide a full continuum of care, from mild illness and injury to the most severe medical emergency.

In addition to caring for children at the main campus in Kearny Mesa, Childrens has 15 neighborhood centers that offer primary care and specialized services. Childrens is also active in numerous community outreach programs, including health education, early intervention and counseling, child abuse prevention and child safety issues.

SPECIALTIES AND RESEARCH

Childrens is the only pediatric teaching hospital in the region for pediatric doctors, nurses, pharmacists and all other pediatric-specific clinical trainees. Its the regions only Level I pediatric trauma center. Childrens also provides all of the non-neonatal California Childrens Services specialty care services in the region and is the only Level IV full-scope, regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit facility in San Diego, caring for the sickest and most medically fragile babies.

SERVICES

Childrens offers a wide variety of services, such as Childrens Network of Caring, where kids can receive specialized clinical and primary care services throughout the county. It offers a broad range of services, from speech, physical and occupational therapies to child guidance and child protective services. Childrens also offers a Healthcare Referral Service that serves as a community resource center for families, physicians and agencies. Childrens has a convalescent hospital that offers a home-like environment, where medically fragile and developmentally disabled kids can receive round-the-clock care.

HONORS AND RECOGNITION

Childrens Hospital Auxiliary was named the Outstanding Philanthropic Organization by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego chapter, for its outstanding work in 2005 and for serving the community for 52 years.  Childrens Hospital, San Diego, was the 2002 recipient of the prestigious Ernest A. Codman Award. The hospital has been recognized as a national leader for pioneering work. Childrens Hospital, San Diego, was the first pediatric organization to be a winner of this award.  Childrens has also received the Peter Barron Stark & Associates Award for Workplace Excellence.
