Yes, As a Matter of Fact, Timing Is Everything . . . |

A KILLER BUSINESS: Designer Doug Wilson, who’s opening a small gallery of his artworks at the Leaping Lotus in Solana Beach, feels confident about his chances for success. He feels less confident about the chances of a neighboring business. A new window banner just went up in a nearby storefront announcing: “Baja Leisure Travel Agency.”
ENTRE NEWS: Not that it’s a surprise, it just came sooner than I would have imagined: From Chicago to Coronado — a Twitter Soap Opera Written in 140-Word Sound Bytes. The plot line: A culturally challenged Chicago to Coronado transplant — Prada-heeled, agency CEO, Economic Club of Chicago member — is forced into flip-flops and a life among Navy SEALs. Creator Kirsten Osolind says all Tweeters are encouraged to contribute their own 140-word “bytes” of the story by logging on to twitter.com/kirsteno and following directions ... Time is money. And when you’re the vice president of the United States, time is a lot of money. That little reception this Thursday in Point Loma for Veep Joe Biden (the one I told you about last Friday) starts early — “4:15 in the Evening,” the invite says. If you’d like to attend, it’s $5,000 a couple. And no dinner, apparently. Want to be a host? 50,000 big ones ... Termed-out San Diego City Councilmember Toni Atkins is making it official. She’s scheduled her first fund-raiser for the state Assembly on May 28 in the Hillcrest home of Bill Beck and David Huskey. Something considerably less than $5,000 a couple, presumably. Democrat Atkins is going after termed-out Democrat Lori Saldana’s 76th Assembly District seat.
TIMES ARE TOUGH: Melissa Winter, on the job in Washington, phoned her mother, Patricia, in San Diego the other day with the big news she’d been promoted to special assistant to the president, deputy chief of staff to Michelle Obama. “Send me one of your business cards,” her excited mother told her. “I haven’t had the time to get them,” Melissa replied. And then, quietly, “Besides, we have to order and pay for them ourselves.”
SAN DIEGANS’ INK: UC San Diego alum Mike Judge comes home to keynote the university’s All Campus Graduation Celebration June 12. A local boy made good, writer-director Judge is the creator of cult films and TV shows including Beavis and Butthead, Office Space and King of the Hill. This fall, he goes mainstream with Extract, a feature film starring Ben Affleck and Jason Bateman ... How’d you like to work all day with your boss sitting directly behind you? Think you’d choke? That’s where Padres boss Kevin Towers sat last weekend in Los Angeles while his team played the Dodgers: front row, center seat, directly behind home plate, for three straight games — as the Padres lost three straight ... Mayor Jerry Sanders, who as police chief reported to former mayor Susan Golding, turned up at the press conference Friday announcing the renaming of the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (now Promises2Kids), headed by Golding. “I’m here,” Sanders intoned, “because I really believe in this cause. And because I’m used to doing what Susan tells me to do.”
SMILE PRETTY: The San Diego Union-Tribune’s quarterly tag-along magazine, SD Health, is chock full of well-timed articles in advance of summer. Like “Losing weight and gaining self-esteem,” “Firm, fit thighs for summer” and “Brush up on your dental care.” But the choice of cover girl may have been imperfect timing. The blonde on the cover with the BIG smile is Carrie Prejean, photographed well before she lost the Miss USA crown with her famous (or infamous) stand against gay marriage.
