BOOKSHELF

Motherhood and Mother Nature

Just in time for Mother’s Day, a new novel by San Diego writer Taylor Wilshire, The Book of Mom (Nautilus Press, $13.95), tells a familiar story. Tate, a stay-at-home mom, is burned out and feels she’s lost sight of the person she was before children. Wilshire gives Tate a good therapist and a funny friend, and together they take readers on what aims to be an inspirational journey of self-discovery. But the book really belongs on the self-help and spirituality shelves (there are numerous references to God). And it’s mundane: mothers up late at night complaining about their husbands and drinking martinis, and our self-seeking protagonist saying things like “I screamed at my kids this morning and it scared them and I saw what I did and I can’t stand myself because of it.” It seems as if Wilshire——a mother of two and an ordained minister——has simply written a vaguely autobiographical, rather uninspired account of her own journey.

New from local Sunbelt Publications is Anza-Borrego: A Photographic Journey ($19.95), by Escondido writer, photographer and former mayor Ernie Cowan. The book’s vivid color photos and descriptive text capture the essence of this beautiful desert state park. Arranged as virtual journey, Anza-Borrego takes readers from the park’s pine-topped mountains to its sand dunes and badlands. Another book about our region, Poway by Poway, by Jeff Figler (Arcadia, $19.99), is an eye-opening pictorial history of that city, from the time of the Diegueño and Luiseño Indians to today.
