A TALENT FOR GENIUS

I’ve subscribed to San Diego Magazine for years, and have always enjoyed the reporting and stories. But I have to say I view Deirdre O’Shea’s article, “Glass Act” [March], to be one of the best pieces done on an architect and his passion for his craft.

She did a marvelous job of bringing to the reader the talents and creative genius of Homer Delawie. The best part is that the man and the house are a part of the San Diego fabric, America’s Most Beautiful City.

THE FINE PRINT

I enjoy San Diego Magazine so much that when a “Notice of Renewal” form arrived, I wrote out a check right away and mailed it in the envelope provided.

Later, while looking at what is probably the nicest-looking young lady ever to grace your cover [March 2007], I noticed that your mailing label on the cover says “NOV 09.” This led me to think my subscription does not expire until then. I called the phone number on the Notice of Renewal without success, so I then tried your local number.

The circulation department knew about this issue, and told me the outfit that sent me the renewal notice has no connection with San Diego Magazine. I suggested the magazine put something in the next issue advising your loyal readers about the [problem] with this firm, so they will not fall for it as I did.

Please tell me San Diego Magazine is doing everything possible to not only shine the light of day on [this issue] and advise your customers of this very realistic-looking renewal notice——but that you are doing something about it.

Fortunately, I noticed the label thanks to your lovely cover girl, and I was able to stop payment of my check in time. It only cost me $19 instead of $30.99! It would please me no end if you would properly publicize this fraud; I will be very disappointed in your magazine if you do not.

By the way, I am also disappointed you did not give my savior cover girl the recognition she surely deserves! Who cares who the photographer was; who’s the GIRL?

This problem has become widespread, and national publications have been targeted, too. It is our understanding that the U.S. postal inspector and FBI are following up on this. Of course, we are doing everything we can to cooperate with an investigation. To make sure you’re dealing directly with San Diego Magazine when you receive a renewal notice, look for our official logo or the signature of a magazine employee. Additionally, you should look for an Illinois postmark; that’s where our subscriptions are handled. Incidentally, the cover girl’s name is Megan White, with NextModelManagement.com.

IMPROVED WITH AGE

When I first started reading San Diego Magazine, I thought the society photos were of wrinkled old hags. Twenty years later, those older women look pretty good! The magazine must be improving. I haven’t changed!

POLITICS UNUSUAL

Thank you for such a sensitive interview with gay Republican Carl DeMaio [Dialogue with Tom Blair, April]. You seemed to outline his dilemma perfectly.

It will be very difficult for a gay man to be elected to city council from District 5, but good luck to Carl.
