ART

The Natural

Few artists can boast as diverse an array of influences as Jean Kazandjian, featured this month at La Jolla’s Madison Gallery. With roots in traditional Armenian culture, he started drawing at an early age. As a high school student, he was awarded first prize for his tapestry submission to a competitive exhibition at the Sursock Museum of Beirut. Later, upon settling in turbulent 1960s Paris, he was introduced to interior design and painting——and to Paris art-world heavyweights Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, Leonardo Cremonini, Francis Bacon and Alexander Calder. The recognition of his talents in such an esteemed setting led Kazandjian to focus primarily on painting, which he has done ever since. His training as an architect and his love for motion pictures are also evident in his work. Subjects appear at times to be simplified like a negative slide, while many of his paintings take on a sort of minimalist quality——a bit abstract, a bit surreal. See his work beginning May 11. 1020 Prospect St., Ste. 130, 858-459-0836; madisongalleries.com.
