San Diego Coastkeeper, San Diego’s largest professional environmental organization working to protect coastal waters, launches its quarterly Signs of the Tide public forum on Thursday, April 1, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. The world-café-style discussions will cover timely and important issues relating to San Diego’s water, focusing on science education in schools for its inaugural event at Elementary Institute of Science, located at 608 51st St., San Diego, Calif., 92114.
At the April 1 Signs of the Tide, Voice of San Diego Education Reporter Emily Alpert will moderate a panel consisting of SDUSD Board President Richard Barrera, San Diego Science Alliance Executive Director Nancy Taylor and a Clean Tech representative followed by a session of small group discussions to engage all participants.
California state budget cuts may deplete the science department in the SDUSD. It is important to prepare the students for the new economy. As San Diego’s high technology and green technology are leading industries in the nation it is imperative to prepare our students with the proper science education to boost the local economy. Events like Signs of the Tide help educate, engage and empower participants in issues relating to the health of San Diego’s coastal waters and the significance of science education in local schools.
