Letters to the Editor

WATCH CLOSER

I understand your annual “50 People to Watch” article is about those who might make news in 2009, not necessarily newsmakers of ’08. But how could you ignore one North County guy who, for no other reason than enforcing common sense, saved our 760 area code?

Private citizen Scott Chatfield of Leucadia started the campaign, rallied every elected leader, community group, the Marine Corps and chambers of commerce in North County, and forced the California Public Utilities Commission to unprecedentedly reverse their boneheaded decision, thus saving our 760.

Perhaps my resentment stems from not being recognized by your magazine as one of 82 people to watch in 1982, when I was North County’s version of San Diego’s Mayor Roger Hedgecock, and San Diego media didn’t know anything ever happened north of Del Mar. Because you missed me, I’ve spent years attending Politicians Anonymous.

I think I’m over it now.

SOMETHING FISHY

Thank you for Bob Rowland’s inside look at Hubbs-SeaWorld’s aquaculture project [“Fishing for a Future,” February]. It’s in-depth stories about our region, like this one——sadly missing, these days, from the local newspapers——that keep us reading San Diego Magazine year after year.

As Americans——especially Californians——have become more and more devoted to eating healthy, it’s been inevitable that our local waters would become fished out. (Anybody remember the abalone?) How comforting to know the Hubbs project could eventually culture up to 3,000 tons of striped bass a year through its offshore fish-farming program. That provides cause for optimism.

My only fear is that the approval process might ultimately doom the project. Hard to stay optimistic when one learns that permitting, public review and oversight will involve the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency, the California Department of Fish & Game and the California Coastal Commission. By the time they’re all through with it, aquaculture may well be deemed a threat to our national security.

HOT AND HOTTER

I am usually wholly impressed by the excellence of your magazine’s editorial content. However, I think you experienced a rare lapse in reporting when you left my husband off your “Hot Husbands” list [by Julia Beeson Polloreno, February]. Michael Spengler is loved not only by this wife but by wives all over San Diego, for making them look gorgeous in his photographs throughout the year.

A favorite of local families and organizations, Michael is living his dream in La Jolla, photographing seven days a week while managing to be an excellent husband and father. Surrounded by females——with our three daughters, 10, 6 and six months, and Princess Fiona, a crazy Boston terrier, clamoring around him——he makes us all laugh and feel loved each and every day.

When not working with clients, Michael is donating his time and talents to area schools and nonprofits, or opening his studio to aspiring photographers to share the dream. He’s also known to volunteer in our girls’ classrooms, join a field trip or head up a Girl Scout meeting. And perhaps best of all, when asked, he’s never once told me I look “fine.”

He really is one of the good guys . . . and pretty darn cute, too. So, while I’m not ready to stop reading your magazine in protest, I do hope you’ll remember Michael the next time you’re creating a list. I’ll take either the 50 People to Watch in 2010 or Hot Husbands ——both work for him.

Your still-dedicated reader,

JENNIFER SPENGLER
