Stock your beauty arsenal with the season’s most flattering beauty and skin products
LIKE FITTED BLACK PANTS and a crisp white shirt, some looks never go out of style. The same can be said for the fresh faces and feminine makeup gracing runways at the spring fashion shows. Warm, healthy and with just a tad of glow, each look took a little hit of color with amped-up glosses (think universally flattering shades of champagne and gold). On eyes, it was a new take on the otherwise boring brown or black: Gray shadows ruled the runway at shows like Alberta Ferretti and Christian Lacroix. Gray——unlike black——can soften your look but still define your eyes. The biggest trend this spring, though, might just be a bold hue for nails——particularly a midnight blue with a lot of shine that, surprisingly, goes with everything and makes nails look seriously chic.
1. La Mer The Powder, $70; Neiman Marcus The Cadillac of bronzing powders, each teeny particle is made with good-for-your-skin sea kelp (right from the shores of La Jolla, in fact!). We don’t pretend to understand the NASA-like science that goes into this natural-looking formula, but we do know that nothing goes on with a lighter texture, gives a more beautiful golden tan and exudes more glamour than this powder.
2. Chanel Blue Satin Nail Polish, $19; chanel.com The geniuses at Chanel have done it again. Sparking a craze for sophisticated blue polish, this interpretation is more posh than punk. The buzz is that it’s nearly sold out, so get it while you can.
3. Shu Uemura Pearlescent Gunpowder Gray, about $20, shuuemura-usa.com Smooth and suede-like, this powder shadow goes on like a dream and gives your lids a sheer wash of casual color. It also works beautifully as an eyeliner, enhancing the whites of your eyes and making your eye color pop.
4. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, $17.50; kiehls.com Healthy skin is always trendy. Get it with a vitamin-packed cleanser like this one, made with apricot kernel oil, avocado and vitamins C and E. It’s mild enough for all skin types, removes makeup and preps skin for all the trends of the season.
5. The Balm Two Timer Mascara, $19, sephora.com This two-sided wand creates out-to-there lashes instantly. One side coaxes out major volume and thickness; the other works out the kinks, defines each lash and steers you clear of Tammy Faye territory. Use one side for daytime and the drop-dead-gorgeous duo for night.
Nars Greek Holiday Lip Gloss, $23, narscosmetics.com (not pictured) Sheer, beige gloss is injected with tiny specks of shimmer to work wonders with any complexion. Wear it alone for a softer look or over a dark lip color for a more dramatic effect.
Boys of Spring
MEN’S HIGH FASHION looks great in theory and on the runways of Milan and Paris, but sometimes, trends can get lost in translation. With that in mind, we present the season’s top trends for guys——and some guidelines for taking them from runway to every day.
Prints Charming
Prada outfitted models in patterns that recall a Seventies-era movie star (think shirts with floral patterns, geometric shapes and bold colors). While the runway models paired these shirts with jumpsuit-like pants, we suggest a toned-down pairing of slim (but not tapered) Kasil Richards jeans. Find them at Cardiff’s L.A. Fairchild Denim Bar.
Take a Bow
Forget the staid and stuffy look of a solid necktie with your suit. Jazz things up with a whimsical upgrade in the form of a bow tie, the perfect addition to a casual summer suit. Browse your local J. Crew or Brooks Brothers for classic styles and quirky patterns.
Sporty Spice
Taking a twist on the traditional athletic look (no more frumpy sweatpants!), lines like Gucci, Generra (pictured) and Ben Sherman are keeping things modern. Graphic tees, leather jackets and anoraks with clean lines are just a sampling of the sporty duds with style. Get the look at Elizabeth’s Closet in La Jolla and Gucci at Fashion Valley Mall.
Fresh Faces
In the chilly and rainy winter, we might have let you men get away with those grizzly man beards. But now that spring is upon us, we want to see some skin——on your face, that is.
