BOOKSHELF
Confronting Ghosts
When Navy psychologist Heidi Squier Kraft had to deploy to Iraq in 2004 to care for traumatized combat Marines, she left 15-month-old twins behind with her husband and parents. When she returned eight months later, her babies were walking, and Kraft was a changed woman——one who had treated, counseled and comforted soldiers, many of them severely injured, some of them dying. Holding the hand of one of those gravely injured men——Corporal Jason Dunham, who threw himself on a live grenade to save the Marines around him——had a profound effect on Kraft’s own life. As part of her transition back to suburban life, Kraft wrote Rule Number Two: Lessons I Learned in a Combat Hospital (Little, Brown, $23.99). She is now deputy coordinator for the U.S. Navy Combat Stress Program in San Diego.
Patricia Santana’s latest novel, Ghosts of El Grullo (University of New Mexico Press, $24.95), is the sequel to her critically acclaimed Motorcycle Ride on the Sea of Tranquility. In Ghosts, Santana——a professor at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon——tells the story of Yolanda Sahagun, a woman who escapes the confines of her huge family by reading. While she’s in college, her beloved mother dies, and Yolanda makes her way to El Grullo, Jalisco, the Mexican village where her parents grew up. Once there, she confronts her family’s past as she struggles to shape her own future.
