San Diego By Design
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT when it comes to decorating the interiors of the condominiums shooting up in downtown San Diego.
Harold Pell, who’s spent 28 years as a designer, chose a 1940s Hollywood motif for a striking redo of a CityFront Terrace condo owned by a couple from Scottsdale, Arizona. As shown here in an exclusive first look, the design presents a joie de vivre style that’s pure Art Deco romance.
The couple, who divide time between Arizona, San Diego and New York, like the anonymity of condo living. They let their taste show through the capable designs of Pell.
“They’ve been married many, many years, and they’re emptynesters, but they still act as if they’re on their honeymoon,” Pell says of the pair. “The unit is cozy, and it reflects their warmth for each other.”
The formal yet comfortable living room, with multifunctional lighting, makes the most of views and sets the mood for listening to music, watching television, gazing into the cityscape or sharing good conversation with friends.
The pied-à-terre is a summer getaway. The owners also love to entertain, but with only 1,500 square feet of total space, there isn’t a lot of room for grand spatial statements. Pell found creative ways to suggest expanse.
Space-saving ideas abound. The kitchen area can disappear like a David Copperfield prop. The living room television pops up on command or hides below a wonderful piece of original art—in this case, a Matisse.
Because the owners told Pell to install every modern convenience technology has to offer, the ceilings are lowered to allow the brains of the electrical units to run above. As a result, you don’t notice an outlet or a wire anywhere.
This Pell project sings with Cole Porter or the Gershwins, reminding you that whatever style you choose, condos can deliver interior moods in any key.
The kitchen is revealed behind the double pocket doors, which recess into the hallway wall and the wall behind the fireplace.
The office also serves as a family room, guest area, library and central control port for audio/video systems.
The “Marilyn” dining banquette is upholstered with dark plum leather, enhanced with “platinum tipping.” The chairs, mirror, waterfall chandelier and trim on the ceiling continue the silver accent theme. The table expands for additional seating with two 18-inch leaves.
A warm and inviting welcome to the master bedroom.
