All the News That Fits ...

THE SOURCE’S MOUTH: Paul Menard, an admitted news junkie, always seems to get to the meat of the issue. Take the fly infestation that’s been plaguing the White House this week. “Of course,” Menard says, “Obama is not the first president who’s had fly problems. Bill Clinton had a fly problem for eight years.”

ITEMIZED: Prince Albert of Monaco has accepted an invitation to San Diego in October to visit Scripps Institution of Oceanography and accept the second Roger Revelle prize for his efforts to protect the global environment. The prince will deliver a lecture and attend the gala in his honor on the UCSD campus ... When the Padres salute the Negro Leagues in a pre-game ceremony at Petco Park tomorrow, the oldest living former pro-baller will feel the love. Emilio Navarro, 103, will be on the field to share in the accolades ... A film production company called Snackaholic Inc. began 11 weeks of filming in Pacific Beach this week on a documentary for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network. It’s all about a surf camp teaching autistic children wave-riding and relationship-building with their families — a story reported in San Diego Magazine in Februrary ... San Diego’s Rady Children’s Hospital scores high in U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of top U.S. children’s hospitals, to be published in the August issue. Rady is among the top 30 in six of 10 categories, including orthopedics, respiratory disorders and heart surgery.

BUSTED AGAIN: There are busts, and then there are busts. When Ryan Leaf left the Chargers and blew town nine seasons ago, he was already a disappointment to a team and a city. He bounced around the NFL for a bit, but it wasn’t long before he continued his slide. This week, he came close to bottoming out when he was arrested at the Canadian border and jailed on an arrest warrant in Texas charging him with drug and burglary felonies. Late yesterday, a Leaf spokesman said he’d been undergoing drug rehab in Canada, and was on his way home to face the music when he was busted. And that word “bust” has become synonymous with Leaf. In 2006, he topped ESPN’s list of “The 50 All-time Busts in the NFL Draft.” Last year, he made Yahoo’s list of “Six Favorite NFL Busts — and Where Are They Now.” The answer to that one: out on bail awaiting trial.

THE GROUNDED EAR: There’s been no comment from Mari Lyn Salvador since her departure two weeks ago after five years as CEO of San Diego’s Museum of Man. The museum’s board chairman said there was a “gentleman’s agreement” between Salvador and the board to make no comment until her return from Portugal, expected next week. But if there was a gag order, it’s been rather ineffective. Some of Salvador’s supporters — which include three board members who’ve resigned since her departure — say she was fired. Salvador’s interim replacement is MaryAnn Brooks-Gonyer, whose husband Richard is COO and CFO of the Natural History Museum. No coincidence, says one Salvador partisan, who cites rumors of a proposed alignment between the Natural History Museum and Museum of Man.

QUOTEWORTHY: Gov. Schwarzenegger did a bit of a flip-flop in Escondido on Monday when he rolled out his new position on selling off prime California real estate — including the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack — to help balance the budget. “When we have a financial crisis,” he said, “we should not be in the real estate business.” Thank you. The real estate agents could have told us that, Governor.
