Roy's Opens In Downtown San Diego
June 11: The bayside restaurant in downtown’s Marriott Hotel & Marina used to be called Yacht Club. The urban scene took a step in the right direction with the replacement Roy’s restaurant.
Roy’s held a grand opening this week. Free food and booze—and both within walking distance from San Diego Magazine. You know I was there—with a head start toward the bar and my pockets lined with plastic (the better to take home sushi snackers).
The interior of Roy’s is dark, but more elegant than Yacht Club. The room is spacious—with a seating capacity of 420 spread over 17,500 square feet (including an outdoor patio).
The roast beef sandwiches served on slider-sized buns were a hit. I especially enjoyed Roy’s cooked sushi offerings. The menu is Hawaiian fusion—specifically not Asian fusion. The Marriott location is the 36th Roy’s, and this is the 20th anniversary of chef Roy Yamaguchi’s chain.
There’s a sign in front of the Marriott that signals the existence of Roy’s. But it’s a little maze-like to work your way through the hotel to get to the restaurant. You can get access if you walk the concrete path along the bay from Seaport Village. And if you’re really adventurous, try to find the secret pathway that exists between the Marriott towers and leads to the bay.
Post your thoughts on Roy’s or downtown restaurants, or just open up about Hawaiian fusion in general…
