Pads Win Five in a Row
A blog, for San Diego sports fans, by a San Diego sports fan.
June 10: Now that’s better. That’s what fans of the San Diego Padres have become accustomed to over the past few years. Only two weeks removed from having the worst record in baseball, the Padres have now won five in a row, including a four-game sweep of the New York Mets.
Since May 21, when the team sat at 18-33, San Diego has ripped off 10 wins in 14 games, and now sits only 6.5 games back from NL West leaders Arizona. Even better news for the Pads is that current Cy Young winner Jake Peavy is set to return from the disabled list on Thursday against the Blue Meanies (aka The Dodgers.) Peavy has been sidelined since mid-May with a strained elbow on his golden pitching arm.
In addition, to celebrate the kickoff of the 2008 European Championship, from June 4th to 7th, San Diego won each of its games with very soccer-like final scores of 2-1. (Actually, I can’t back this up. It’s just more indication that the offense still sucks. Hard.)
Nonetheless, woo hoo! Break up the Friars!
Eric Yates, much like the rest of the city, isn’t a native San Diegan. He’s been here for the past eight years and has adopted the Padres and Chargers as his own. He has served as a full-time and freelance sportswriter while in San Diego, covering the beat for both teams. A sports fanatic, his crowning achievement as a fan was appearing on the ESPN sports-trivia game show Stump the Schwab, and coming within one question of toppling the fat man.
