BOOKSHELF
In the Classroom
Rancho Santa Fe resident Paul Hannam is an entrepreneur, lecturer at Oxford University, corporate trainer and author. His second book, The Magic of Groundhog Day (Waterside Press, $21.95), uses the movie by the same name as a parable to illustrate that we all have the power to change our thoughts, emotions, attitudes and behaviors——in short, our lives. In the movie Groundhog Day, weatherman Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) keeps waking up in the morning to live the same day over and over. Although at first it seems a kind of imprisonment, in the end, Connors realizes that although the day will remain the same, he can change, and by doing so he turns the worst day of his life into the best. Hannam’s nonfiction book is a guide to that same sort of transformation.
San Diego novelist Jincy Willet’s new book, The Writing Class (St. Martin’s Press, $24.95), is a darkly comic mystery. It’s the story of Amy Gallup, a writer who achieved critical success in her 20s——though never commercial success——and is now widowed, divorced and not so successful. One night a week, she teaches a writing class at the local university, mostly because she hates being alone. A murder in the class makes each student a suspect, and Gallup searches their writing for clues to the killer. The hitch: She needs help from the students themselves, one of whom is the murderer.
