Meet the turf in style with these timeless tips
I’m really excited to be contributing as a guest blogger for the next few weeks while the regular fashion contributor, Elizabeth Leffler, is out enjoying her life as a newlywed! I’ve always had a deep infatuation with fashion, and blogging about it is just one of the many ways I express my love for the industry. I regularly write my own blog, sarahmcarr.com, on upcoming fashion trends, aspiring designers, hot brands and San Diego events but being able to contribute as a guest blogger to the fashion section at San Diego Magazine is a unique and incredible opportunity! So thank you for inviting me into your fabulous lives! Now let’s get started ...
The Del Mar Races are one of San Diego’s most iconic social and fashion gatherings. People flock to the tracks, place their bets and, most importantly, show off some of Southern California’s most fabulous summer fashion. When most people think of horseracing, they think of the fashion — sorry jockeys!
Del Mar is the place to be seen this summer, so I’m here to give you a few fashion musts to look your absolute best where the surf meets the turf down at old Del Mar.
Sun Hat: This is the epicenter of all horseracing fashion. Go big or go home. If you find a hat you absolutely love, buy it and coordinate your outfit around it. Yes, it’s really that simple. You don’t have to stick with straw – there is a plethora of hats just waiting for you to discover! Remember, the bigger, the better. Be a serious hat diva! If hats aren’t your thing, you can always go for a simple floral or feathery headpiece. They can be easily fastened to your head and look dramatic and absolutely stunning.
Wedges: Warning — Opening Day at the races is a long one. However, I empathize with you and know that a great pair of heels will make you feel fabulous. Why get rid of that feeling just because our feet are wimps? Wedges are the answer. Wearing a wedge will be less of a strain on your tootsies after a full day at the races, but you’ll still look tall and sexy. Trust me — your feet and the fashion gods will stay happy.
Sun Dress: Maxi or mini — try to find something that's versatile and can be worn easily from a summery day to a cooler night in case you decide to stay for a concert or go out for dinner and drinks in the evening. You’ll look like you got ready specifically for a night out! I’m a fan of the one-shoulder dresses, especially those with extra fabric that allow for a billowy effect. Don’t go too tight. You’ll stay cooler with a little extra fabric and look much more appropriate all day long. I really like the color and cut of this Shoshanna one-shoulder dress. I would pair it with nude wedges and a tan or white hat.
Cardigan: Just in case it cools off a little too much, bring a cardigan to cover your shoulders after the sun sets. Banana Republic has some adorable cardigans that will complement any summer dress you wear to the races and can easily be stashed away in your purse during the summer heat.
Accessories: Accessorize yourself this racing season with a fine mixture of bracelets. Mix textures, colors and vintage pieces to create a one-of-a-kind look. Don’t go overboard though. If you wear a variety of bracelets, omit the earrings and necklace; the sparkle from the bangles will be more than enough to accent and pull your outfit together.
Also, don’t forget SPF lip balm. Don’t let the dry, salty air take a toll on your pout — keep your lips hydrated and luscious all day long with some Burt’s Beeswax lip balm. The minty flavor will feel refreshing too!
With these helpful fashion tips I’m confident you will make this racing season a glorious one! Happy bidding!
