National Attention
THE SETTING was The Peabody Hotel in Memphis. The group convening for its awards program was the City & Regional Magazine Association. Stepping up to the lectern to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award was San Diego Magazine president Jim Fitzpatrick. Cue the standing ovation.

CRMA is a collection of more than 200 city magazines from around the country (and Canada) — like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York magazines. Membership requires that a publication have a paid circulation. Chain magazines primarily given away for free are not eligible to join. For more than a decade, Fitzpatrick has worked on a national level to help raise awareness of legitimate city and regional publications. Our staff has always been aware of the insight and business acumen possessed by our prez. It’s nice to see that his colleagues — and the powers that be at other leading-edge magazines — recognize that as well.

The Lifetime Achievement Award wasn’t our only highlight that night at The Peabody. A few moments later — after Texas Monthly walked off with its annual passel of editorial prizes — San Diego Magazine garnered recognition. Shane Liddick took second place in the Writer of the Year category. The entry was based on his body of work in 2007. Last year, he wrote features about his own stint as a substitute teacher in a tough inner-city school, dived into the muddy dealings behind the Bajagua water-treatment plant and covered the story of underage prostitution all over San Diego. Look for more of Liddick’s work in coming months.

AS ALWAYS, THERE’S MUCH TO READ in this issue. Rolling Stone contributing editor Peter Wilkinson provides in-depth coverage of the saga of the Bird Rock Bandits, an erstwhile La Jolla High “gang” charged with murdering surfer Emery Kauanui. The story is timely — the case could go to trial this month.

And be sure to check out Pat Launer’s “Fix It!” cover story. It lets you know where to take a busted laptop, broken sunglasses and even where to take your dog for root canal. We also check in on the long-simmering debate around the cross at Mount Soledad. And find out what Del Mar Racetrack CEO Joe Harper keeps on his desk at work.

Enjoy the issue. And when you’re done, enjoy expanded coverage of the city on our Web site (sandiegomagazine.com).
