Artrageous!

Barbara Markoff

BARBARA MARKOFF IS PROUD of her company’s growth. Artrageous!, which she runs with her husband, Rob, is no small framing shop. Since 1981, Markoff has grown the business from framing art for interior designers and art galleries to selling complete art programs to corporate clients nationwide. Today, art consulting to corporations is the lifeblood of Artrageous!

“Companies need a professional image, and art is an important part of the package,” says Markoff. “Art finishes their look.”

If you’ve visited any of San Diego’s largest corporate offices, banks, hospitals or clinics, you’ve probably seen art placed by Markoff. You may admire the presence of a focal piece of art, or experience a calm or energized feeling. When working with corporate clients, Markoff considers the nature of the business and the appropriate psychological response for the intended audience. Markoff, who has a bachelor’s degree in fine art and a master’s degree in art therapy, and formerly practiced art therapy in a healthcare facility, draws on her clinical and art background to specify each piece, ensuring it blends in with the surroundings.

“I walk the space to get a feel for what will reflect the right image and tie in with their outlook on business,” Markoff says. “I formulate an art program by overseeing art selection, framing design, art placement and installation. We do everything in our own facility.”

Earning accounts doesn’t happen through artistic inspiration— it takes a go-getter attitude. “Prospecting is pivotal in landing new jobs. I’m on the phone constantly, setting appointments and developing the business.”

Markoff wouldn’t have it any other way. “I enjoy the fact that I am always working on something new,” she says. “I like transforming a stark office into a well-integrated space reflecting the corporate image and its occupants. I love bringing ideas to life.”

Markoff works with San Diego’s movers and shakers, making her position as a woman who moves the city an appropriate title. “We’re creating positive corporate work environments,” she says. “In the process, we’re helping them move forward in their mission.”
