The Fantastic Fourth

The Fantastic Fourth

The Fourth of July is traditionally when the U.S. celebrates its independence, and with the country at war, more people than usual may pause to contemplate the deeper meaning of the commemoration. Still, Independence Day reigns as the prime summer holiday, especially here, with our abundance of areas for beaching, barbecuing and related activities. As usual, there are festivities and fireworks throughout the county. Three special celebrations:

* Coronado’s old-fashioned Fourth of July festivities offer a big parade, starting at 10 a.m. on Orange Ave. and First Street, a concert in Spreckels Park at 4 and a fireworks display over Glorietta Bay at 9.

* SeaWorld features musical acts, extended hours and what’s billed as San Diego’s biggest fireworks show at 9:30. 800- 25-SHAMU (74268); seaworld.com.

* Legoland’s two-day “Red, White and Boom” Fourth of July celebration includes a fireworks extravaganza and interactive U.S. flag model-building events, 10-8, with fireworks show following. 760-918-5346; www.legoland.com.
