Weekly Staff Picks: Thai Food, Tide Pools and Taquerias

Sightseeing/hiking:

Cabrillo National Monument and the Point Loma Lighthouse has views of the San Diego Bay harbor and skyline, Coronado/Naval Air Station, Mexico’s Coronado Islands and the expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It hosts more than 200 recorded species of birds. During the low tide, pools form in the rocky depressions of the intertidal zone exposing a plethora of underwater life that can now be easily viewed. There is also a two-mile hiking trail, historical exhibits, tours and even potential whale watching during the Pacific Gray Whale’s annual migration (December through February).

Thai food:

SAB-E-Lee is small and understated but produces outstanding Thai food at reasonable prices. There are only a few tables if you’re dining in the restaurant so we recommend ordering take-out — especially if you have a large group or you’re eating during prime dinner hours.

Creole food:

The New Orleans Creole Café in Old Town is a refreshing change from all the Mexican restaurants. Try the amazing macaroni and cheese with andouille while dining outside in their cute courtyard. They’ve also recently increased the selection of New Orleans beers!

Taqueria:

Taco Express is consistently the friendliest taqueria in San Diego. Everyone who works there goes out of their way to make you happy and they are always smiling. The food is authentic and excellent, from fish tacos and veggie burritos to carne asada and California burritos, you can’t go wrong. Get there early for lunch — there will be a line but it moves quickly. Think of it as a tribute to how good the food is.

Dog training:

Carol Harris, owner of the Educated Pet, teaches basic obedience, leash training and more advanced trick classes. She is all about positive reinforcement and making training fun for your dog. Her services encompass more than just the basics — she offers education on nutrition and health for your pup too!

Taco Express is great - although, I've had better California Burritos. The veggie burrito con papas es muy delicioso.

Any time I have friends from out-of-town, I always try to take them to see the tide pools. Excellent pick!
