• In last year’s RecycleMania competition, a nationwide recycling program for universities and colleges, Cal State San Marcos won first place in four out of eight categories in the Partial Campus Division.
• Point Loma Nazarene University selected SPG Solar to design and install a solar system that will produce 80 percent of the peak energy for six campus buildings. Last year, the university received the Environmental Services Department Recycler of the Year award from the city of San Diego.
• San Diego State University offers online green-industry certificate programs in green building construction and in renewable energy and green energy management.
• More than 80 green seminars, workshops and courses at the University of California, San Diego address sustainability issues. Throughout the year, nearly 200 courses with sustainability-related content are offered.
• The University of San Diego’s Student Life Pavilion, slated to open in fall 2009, will be the first LEED-certified (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) building on campus, using sustainable materials, natural ventilation and a “green” roof with views of Mission Bay and the ocean.
