THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA . . . and dines downtown: Actress Meryl Streep stepped into Ivy Hotel’s Quarter Kitchen for dinner recently. At least one other guest at the restaurant that night felt the two-time Oscar winner (and 14-time nominee) deserved an award for style, too, saying, “She looked incredible.”
THE PEAV AND THE BEAV: The night he was named winner of the National League Cy Young Award, Padres ace Jake Peavy celebrated with general manager Kevin Towers and coaches over champagne and massive plates of steak and lobster at The Palm . . . Pope of Trash John Waters showed up in black tie to check out La Jolla Playhouse’s stage adaptation of his film Cry-Baby. His date for the night? Designer Zandra Rhodes. Rikki Lake, the original Pepper Walker, brought her son to the show and pre-party and wore a mod black shift, while American Idol’s Katherine McPhee rocked in black stilettos and a red print dress. Actress Camryn Manheim, Hairspray’s Marissa Jaret Winokur and The Beav himself, Jerry Mathers, were also spotted at the reception, where guests munched on crab cakes and pear-and-Brie quesadillas catered by Wild Thyme.
VOTE FOR PEDRO: The stars were out at the Mother Goose Parade pre-party at Jsix at Hotel Solamar. Among the guests grazing on sushi and ice cream were actors Mario Lopez, Erik Estrada and Dean Cain, plus singer Jesse McCartney and Efren Ramirez of Napoleon Dynamite fame.
CHECKING IN: Rudy Giuliani loves his La Costa. The ex-NYC mayor–turned–presidential candidate’s campaign spending report reveals he’s dropped thousands of dollars at fancy spots including Carlsbad’s La Costa Resort & Spa, where he turned up again recently to speak for a group holding meetings on the property. Not long afterward, the resort welcomed curly-locked actor John C. Reilly . . . Jane Seymour of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Dancing with the Stars checked into the Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla for a quick weekend of R&R.
CHECKING OUT: Supermodel Cindy Crawford showed up to check on the progress of the new Hard Rock Hotel downtown, where hubby Rande Gerber has developed two bars, Moonstone and Sweetwater Saloon. The couple then dined with friends at sushi hot spot Nobu . . . Boxer Oscar de la Hoya popped up at the Keating Hotel for cocktails at the subterranean Minus 1 lounge but didn’t stay the night.
FROM HOLLABACK to giving back: The city officially named October 30 Gwen Stefani Day after the singer donated all proceeds from her recent Cox Arena show——an estimated $160,000——to a fund benefiting fire victims, saying “San Diego has always been so supportive of me.” Before the show, Gwen held a private meet-and-greet with four firefighters, including one who lost his own home. (Listen up, Tragic Kingdom fans: Our backstage spy reports a new No Doubt album and tour are in the offing.)
PROJECT DINNER: Blogger Beth of zenfoodism.com reports a celebrity sighting at Alexander’s in North Park: Ulrike “Uli” Herzner from season three of Bravo’s Project Runway.
