Steady as She Goes ...

READERS WHO DON’T REGULARLY consult the mastheads of magazines — and that would be most of us — may not have noticed, but there’s been a highly significant change in management at San Diego Magazine. Maureen Sullivan, who began her association with the magazine in 2001 and was named publisher four years later, has accepted the added responsibilities of president. It’s an awesome challenge at a time when our national and local economies are suffering new shockwaves almost daily — and the media, in particular, are feeling the aftershocks. But few are as prepared for the challenge as Maureen.

Jim Fitzpatrick, who purchased San Diego Magazine in 1994 and brought it back from the precipice in another difficult time, was wise enough to tap Maureen as a consultant in 2001. She came to us from senior management positions at Alliance Employment Solutions, Manpower San Diego and Mail Boxes Etc.’s global headquarters. In 2003, she was named the magazine’s general manager. In 2005, in the midst of negotiations for the sale of San Diego Magazine to CurtCo Media, Maureen was promoted to publisher and instantly became essential to virtually every facet of the operations.

Maureen Sullivan is smart, determined and demanding. But she also possesses two attributes that might seem contradictory: toughness and soft - ness. When it comes to doing business, she can be tough without being hard. She has the innate ability to examine all sides of an equation and instinctively know what’s best for the business. When it comes to the magazine’s clients and the people who work for her, she can be soft without being a softy. She knows the magazine business is about people, and she cares about people.

San Diego Magazine, the first city magazine in the country, has had just three names atop the masthead in its 60-year history: Ed Self, Jim Fitzpatrick and Maureen Sullivan. All three have been the right person at the right time. Economic times right now are shaky. But those of us lucky enough to work with Maureen know San Diego Magazine is in steady hands.
