Style Makers

Amy Roche

Age: 25
Occupation: Apparel buyer and stylist for Tatiana Boutique

Where are your favorite places to shop in San Diego?
Of course I love to shop at Tatiana because we carry designers that are unique to San Diego, including Rory Beca and Madison Marcus (two of my favorites). I am an absolute Urban Outfitters addict. I love to vintage-shop in Hillcrest, and my basics all come from American Apparel.

What’s your must-have item for spring?
Anything bright-colored and tie-dyed, worn with a pair of highwaisted jeans.

How would you describe your personal style?
Urban vintage. I love to wear unique pieces that nobody else has and accessorize them with cardigans, scarves, and big, bold, gold jewelry.

What’s your biggest fashion splurge?
Handbags.

How much do you spend annually on clothes?
Anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 a year, although this varies.

Who are your fashion role models?
I love Sienna Miller’s style. She has such eclectic taste and is a natural beauty. You always see her in skinny jeans paired with vintage jackets, vests, boots and big sunglasses. Most of her pieces look worn and old, not particularly feminine, but definitely one-of-a-kind.

Annie Loos

Age: 36
Occupation: Owner, Mog & Rue boutique in Encinitas

Where are your favorite places to shop in San Diego?
Bloomingdale’s, Saks and small boutiques throughout San Diego.

What’s your must-have item for spring?
A great dress by Alice + Olivia.

How would you describe your personal style?
I wish I lived in New York; I have a tailored, contemporary style.

What’s your biggest fashion splurge?
Designer sunglasses; you can’t have too many. Plus it’s an easy way to change up your look.

How much do you spend annually on clothes?
That’s a secret.

Who are your fashion role models?
I love Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. They both look effortlessly beautiful. Cameron Diaz always looks amazing, along with Kate Hudson.

Who are your favorite designers?
I love Alice + Olivia, Corey Lynn Calter, Sunner and Anlo. For high-end designers, I love Gucci, Chanel and Chloe.

Mahjuba Levine

Age: 34
Occupation: Wardrobe and fashion stylist (mahjuba.com)

Where are your favorite places to shop in San Diego?
Nordstrom at Fashion Valley accommodates my every fashion need and makes shopping simple for me. I also love to shop at Bloomingdale’s. The store is so beautiful and fun to shop in. Anthropologie is also a favorite; I can spend hours in there. One of my favorite boutiques is Gambucci in La Jolla.

What are your must-have items for spring?
A short, feminine dress that’s cinched at the waist; a beautiful Anya Hindmarch clutch for day and evening; and satin platform pumps by Giambattista Valli or the YSL collection.

How would you describe your personal style?
An intermix of designers. Every season I incorporate a few pieces that fit my lifestyle and personality.

What’s your biggest fashion splurge?
Definitely shoes; I love beautiful shoes.

How much do you spend annually on clothes?
My husband will be reading this, and I would like to continue being married to him! Let’s just say it’s not cheap to look fabulous.

Who are your fashion role models, and what inspires your fashion sense?
Some of my fashion role models are Charlize Theron, Vanessa Paradis and Kate Moss. Designers inspire me. They work so hard to put every collection together and give us a sense of self-expression. One of my favorite designers is John Galliano.

Ryan Gonzalez

Age: 42
Occupation: Vice president, Peaches en Regalia and Ryan’s Collection stores; also works as a commercial real estate associate with Lee & Associates

Where are your favorite places to shop in San Diego?
I like to shop local stores. I think it’s great to have personal service, and I respect independent business operators. Of course, I like Ryan’s Collection in Del Mar for the variety of new, hip clothing for men and women. I also like surf shops like Hansen’s.

What are your must-have items for spring?
T-shirts by Blend, XCVI, Agave and Junk Food. I also like the new denim jeans by Agave, Alberto, Ernest Sewn, Saltaire and Signum.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m all about comfort. On weekends and after work, I wear T-shirts and jeans. At work, I like quality sport and dress shirts (English Laundry, VLuxe, Jhane Barnes) and nice slacks.

What’s your biggest fashion splurge?
Cashmere and leather jackets. I also like the trend toward chunky sterling silver jewelry.

Who are your fashion role models?
I like designer Giorgio Armani, and the style of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Leo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx.
