About Your Better Business Bureau

YOUR BBB

Your San Diego Better Business Bureau provides an array of free services, including unbiased consumer protection advice and reliability reports loaded with information about local companies. Your BBB’s goal is to help consumers avoid costly mistakes, as well as make better choices and more-informed pre-purchase decisions. The new “Start With Trust” tagline tells consumers to do just that. By first checking with the BBB, consumers can find businesses they can trust and avoid the ones with a bad track record. Think of your BBB as the preeminent resource and authority on trust in the marketplace. In fact, the BBB is now calling its members “Accredited Businesses” because that term reflects what a company stands for and what they have achieved by meeting your BBB’s high standards for business conduct. Recently, your BBB introduced a refreshed logo, a redesigned Web site and a series of how-to books on buying a home, franchising and starting a business on eBay. Plus, your BBB marked the 10th year for its Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics program.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TORCH AWARD WINNER

The BBB Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics is an annual awards program honoring local for-profit companies and nonprofit charitable organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to ethical business practices in their relationships with customers, employees, vendors and suppliers. Criteria include how a company resolves customer disputes, ethics training for employees, overall management practices and community involvement. After receiving the prestigious award, many recipients will add the Torch logo to printed ads and include it in mentions on broadcast commercials. The Torch Awards is the way San Diego annually rewards and celebrates ethical business practices in our marketplace and each winner and finalist of a Torch Award exemplifies that adhering to a fair and honorable marketplace gives a company a competitive advantage. More than 570 business attendees were present at the recent Torch Awards presentation luncheon that featured a keynote address by Keith Slotter, special agent in charge of the San Diego FBI office. The presenting sponsor of the 2007 Torch Awards was San Diego County Credit Union.
