Trend In Flight

SAN DIEGO’S RIPENING CULINARY SCENE has spurred the growth of a tasty new trend: the neighborhood wine bar. So says John Alonge, wine expert and owner of the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center.

“As you look at the growing sophistication of the local restaurant scene, the natural counterpart is to see wine bars popping up,” he says. “There’s been an urbanization of taste in San Diego.”

A burgeoning crop of area wine bars cater to oenophiles and wine neophytes alike. In addition to a menu of cooking and wine classes, Alonge’s San Diego Wine and Culinary Center (200 Harbor Drive, downtown, 619-231-6400; sdwineculinary.com) features a bar that samples “wines off the beaten path” and those produced by small family wineries. A café menu and live jazz complement any varietal.
