The Insider

George Clooney in San DiegoBOYS’ NIGHT OUT: When bar impresario Rande Gerber needed a date for the launch of a new Cabaret Night at his Hard Rock Hotel nightspot Sweetwater Saloon, he didn’t turn to wife Cindy Crawford. No, Gerber recruited pal George Clooney to be his plus-one. Though he was booked into the hotel’s Rock Star Suite, Clooney didn’t act the part, instead just hanging out in the lobby late into the night, chatting up employees and guests.

SHE CARES A LOT: Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Sarah Michelle Gellar hosted the Ivy Hotel’s first-anniversary party at the rooftop Eden bar. At a reception for the poverty-fighting nonprofit CARE, Gellar, an ambassador for the charity, stunned guests in a sexy, spaghetti-strap LBD (little black dress) before retiring to her room, where she and a few girlfriends camped out for the weekend. The next morning Gellar set off for SeaWorld, where she took a behind-the-scenes tour of the park and made nice with bottlenose dolphins, penguins, sharks, Beluga whales and killer whales.

IS THERE A MRS. JACK BAUER? 24 star Kiefer Sutherland was also a guest at Gellar’s CARE party, where the actor was spotted (curiously) wearing a band on his left ring finger. Other guests at the event included model Amber Valletta and actor Scott Wolf.

Kendra Wilkinson, Bridget MarquardtGIRLS OF REALITY TV: Two of the Girls Next Door were spotted hanging in S.D. recently, sans their Playboy beau. Bridget Marquardt was at the Ivy Hotel’s rooftop Eden bar filming scenes for her new show on the Travel Channel; she and fellow Playmate (and Clairemont native) Kendra Wilkinson spent two nights in the hotel’s Cabaña Suite. During the same weekend, Wilkinson hosted a party at Red Circle nightclub in the Gaslamp, where she was joined by assorted Chargers players and fellow reality-TV “star” Molly Shea (best known as half of the ditzy Olly Girls duo on E!’s Sunset Tan).

FIERCE HOT MESS: Last year’s Project Runway winner, Christian Siriano, made an appearance on the Simon Fashion Now tour at Fashion Valley. Siriano hosted a fashion show that treated onlookers to a sneak peek at the latest looks from the likes of Arden B, Banana Republic, Guess, Henri Bendel and Lilly Pulitzer. Celeb stylist Robert Verdi was also on the sartorial scene.

Henry Winkler in San DiegoAUTHOR, AUTHOR: The San Diego Jewish Book Fair landed quite the slate of celebrity authors during its November run, not the least controversial of which was noted atheist/Vanity Fair columnist Christopher Hitchens (God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything). Also plugging new books: Henry “The Fonz” Winkler, whose post–Happy Days career found him penning more than a dozen, and actor Evan Handler, who’s best known for playing Charlotte’s hubby on Sex and the City and David Duchovny’s sex-crazed agent on Californication. Among Handler’s lesser-known feats: overcoming leukemia, which he tackles (among other topics) in his latest book of essays, It’s Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive. ——RACHEL ZENN SACHS
