BOOKSHELF

San Diegans Heather Reider and Mary Goulet are the founders of Moms Town, Inc. and hosts of The Mary & Heather Show on HayHouse Radio Friday mornings (listen at hayhouseradio.com). Their first book, It’s All About You: Live the Life You Crave (Free Press, $25), is their response to requests from listeners and Web site readers asking for help with time management, money, sex and business. These are moms looking for a path to rediscover their identities, which are often overtaken by parenting and domestic responsibilities.

A new book about animals at the San Diego Zoo, Who Pooped in the Zoo? Exploring the Weirdest, Wackiest, Grossest and Most Surprising Facts About Zoo Poop (Farcountry Press, $12.95), gives children the lowdown on what animal poop tells us about animals’ bodies and their behavior. The brightly colored book by Caroline Patterson is filled with photographs of San Diego Zoo animals and——as one might expect——their poop.

The fourth novel from serial chick-lit writer Whitney Lyles, First Comes Love (Penguin, $14), follows the plight of Cate Padgett, happily married at last after too many stints as a bridesmaid. Her happiness is short-lived, however, when it becomes clear everyone she knows has moved on to parenting. As the last of her group of friends to finally get hitched, Cate and new hubby Ethan are now the only ones who don’t have a baby or aren’t planning on having one. Lyles’ new novel is the story of this young couple’s slightly complicated quest to get pregnant and their first-timers’ navigation of that pregnancy. The plot is lightweight, and the characters feel a bit one-dimensional, like the snarky gynecologist who makes comments such as “Why do women have babies? Why do you do this to yourselves?”
