THE RESONATING SOUND of bass bumping within the walls of the Airport Lounge can be heard for blocks around Little Italy. Not to mention the sound of Lindbergh Field’s airplanes roaring just above jiving club-hoppers’ heads. And with a wait staff donning aviation uniforms, specialty cocktails boasting clever “flighty” names and a clear-set airport theme, Airport Lounge allows patrons to feel miles away from home.
VIBE: From hipsters and garage-band groupies to scantily clad sorority chicks, Airport Lounge regulars seem to have one thing in common: a mellow mentality. The peaceful patrons somehow seem happier than the average bar patrons——and less likely to explode if you cut in line. Add dim lighting and a deejay spinning an upbeat music tempo, and you have Airport’s vibe——less intense than that of the typical downtown bar.
DÉCOR: A massive tree illuminated by surrounding Christmas lights is the focal point of Airport’s outside patio. Walk up the steps and you enter what feels like a true airplane cabin——with an all-white motif and décor that gives the illusion of airplane windows. The long, narrow inside bar is brightened by multicolored lights and complemented by modern barstools.
EATS & DRINKS: Cleverly named eats add to the venue’s mile-high vibe. One favorite: the Brie layover, a flavorful formation of honey-infused baked Brie topped with candied pecans and served with a baguette. For thirsty customers, the First Class offers a lustrous mix of chilled Chambord and peachy Stoli Persik topped off with Moët & Chandon champagne. Now that’s classy.
MISCELLANEOUS: Claustrophobes, beware——Airport’s inside “cabin area,” though visually appealing, is extremely cramped. The roomy outside patio, on the other hand, not only allows for star-gazing and a cooldown from dancing, it offers plentiful (and comfortable) seating and its own bar.
