IT’S A SAFE BET that within the next 20 years demand will create a local market for reclaimed water. The question is exactly when.
Bajagua Project LLC has said it will use a portion of the proceeds from any reclaimed-water profits to offset the costs of running its Mexican facility, an attractive angle for taxpayers. Company officials say they’ve commissioned a study by Deloitte & Touche that’s returned favorable results—but they can’t release details for sensitive proprietary reasons. (Deloitte confirms it’s been commissioned, though it can’t say for what.) Critics call it another example of obfuscation by Bajagua and point out that once a contract is signed, reclaimed water or no, the deal is done and there’s no going back.
Bajagua is resolute, and says it will push on with plans for tertiary treatment at the Mexican plant.
