A new exhibit at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla showcases 10 artists of serious mettle. The pieces, featured in “Uncommon Metal: A Look at Contemporary Jewelry and Metalwork” through Dec. 30, have been described as wearable art from artists working on the cutting edge of metal. Local artist Jesse Mathes creates neck ruffs inspired by Queen Elizabeth I, exploring issues related to personal space and power. Kathy Buszkiewicz, a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, makes jewelry out of paper money, pointing out “society’s obsession with showing one’s wealth through adornment.” Jack da Silva creates unusual, functional pieces from metal and other materials. San Diego resident Alexandra Hart creates “one-of-a-kind sculpture for the body”——oversized adornments in gold, silver and other precious metals. Tues.-Sat. 10-5:30 (Wed. till 8:30.) 1008 Wall St., La Jolla, 858-454-5872; ljathenaeum.org/exhibitions.html.
