Organizational Spotlight
In 1996, Ken Druck, Ph.D., founder of San Diego-based team-building firm Druck Enterprises Inc., experienced a life-changing event that’s every parent’s worst nightmare: the loss of a child. Druck’s 21-year-old daughter Jenna was killed in a bus accident in India while participating in a Semester at Sea program. Druck took the heartbreak that arose from that tragic event and created the Jenna Druck Foundation (JDF) with the mission of “turning grief into hope and strength into leadership.”
Two programs were developed out of the foundation: Families Helping Families, created “to serve people in their journey through and beyond grief,” and Young Women’s Leadership, established to provide talented young women with leadership skills, motivation and resources to recognize and achieve success.
In order to keep these programs up and running, JDF relies on the help of more than 200 volunteers who assist with a variety of responsibilities, ranging from mentoring the girls in the Young Women’s Leadership program to providing administrative, planning and organizational support for the bereavement services of Families Helping Families.
Druck acknowledged that, although the foundation was formed out of grief, he has been able to experience enjoyment out of the foundation’s efforts.
“The greatest pleasure for me is looking into the eyes of young women who go through our program and experiencing the pride [they feel] in themselves,” he says. “The other greatest pleasure is looking into the eyes of grief families we assist and seeing a glimmer of hope.”
On January 19, the Jenna Druck Foundation will host “The Secret to Having Your Best Year Ever,” a motivational event to benefit the Families Helping Families and Young Women’s Leadership programs. The afternoon event features some of the most famous names in inspirational speaking, including authors Tony Robbins, Ken Blanchard and Dr. Ken Druck, as well as teachers from The Secret and former San Diego Charger-turned-Rock Church pastor Rev. Miles McPherson. Volunteers will be needed to assist with various projects before and during the event. 1 to 6 p.m. San Diego Sports Arena, 3500 Sports Arena Boulevard, 619-294-8000; www.YourBestYearEver.org.
