| AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION 858-410-3850 heart.org The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency with a mission to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Volunteer opportunities include participating in health fairs and passing out information regarding cardiovascular disease and stroke, working in the office in a variety of clerical and phone capacities and assisting with special events. assist with hospital recreation for patients, spouse support groups and family workshops and programs. ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION 858-492-1090 arthritis-sandiego.org The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve individual lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases, as well as to identify appropriate financial resources to support ongoing research aimed at eliminating the number-one disability in America. Current volunteer opportunities include data entry, clerical and phone duties, advocacy, assisting with special events, grant writing, media and public relations. ASSISTANCE LEAGUE OF GREATER SAN DIEGO 619-298-7050 algsd.org Assistance League of Greater San Diego is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to meeting the needs of our community’s children and adults through its philanthropic projects. Volunteer opportunities include participating in health fairs and passing out liver disease information, performing a variety of office duties and assisting with special events. Among other activities, volunteers can help through advocacy, medical expertise, communications and running camps for kids. ARMED SERVICES YMCA 858-751-5755 asymcasd.org The San Diego Armed Services YMCA aims to enhance the lives of military personnel and their family members in spirit, mind and body by providing programs that strengthen families and are relevant to the unique challenges of military life. Volunteers assist with hospital recreation for patients, spouse support groups and family workshops and programs. Volunteers work in outreach and after-school programs, family services, the senior lunch program and as members of the board. BIRCH AQUARIUM AT SCRIPPS 858-822-4934 aquarium.ucsd.edu Birch Aquarium is the interpretive center for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, bringing the wonders of the ocean to the public through exhibits and educational programs. Volunteers provide ocean science education as docents, classroom aides and tidepool interpreters. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY 858-536-4900, extension 213 sdbigs.org Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to provide caring adult mentors for single-parent children, ages 7-16, who are missing quality role models. No special training is required. Programs include one-to-one mentoring in schools or in the community. Volunteers meet with youths two to four times a month in a casual environment. BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SAN DIEGO 866-SDYOUTH sdyouth.org For more than 60 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has been committed to serving at-risk youth ages 6-18 and reaching out to young people in need. Volunteers can participate in fund-raising events or as tutors, chaperones or coaches. | BRAILLE INSTITUTE 858-452-1111 brailleinstitute.org The Braille Institute is working to eliminate blindness and severe sight loss as a barrier to a fulfilling life. Volunteers serve in a number of ways. BURN INSITUTE 858-541-2277 burninstitute.org The Burn Institute is dedicated to reducing burn injuries and deaths through fire and burn prevention education, burn survivor support programs and the funding of burn care research and treatment. Volunteer opportunities range from puppet-show presentations at schools to assisting with special events, installing smoke detectors for seniors to helping with support programs, such as being a camp counselor at the institute’s Camp Beyond the Scars. CALIFORNIA CENTER FOR THE ARTS, ESCONDIDO Education Department: 760-839-4194 artcenter.org The center promotes the arts and their power for community building and enhancement by providing artistic, entertainment, social and cultural education opportunities to enrich the lives of all within its reach. Volunteers can become docents, who give tours, or Art Angels, who help school groups with hands-on art projects. CANINE COMPANIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE 760-901-4300 caninecompanions.org Canine Companions for Independence enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Among the many opportunities to help, volunteers raise puppies for use in the program, socializing them to diverse environments, and also help with fund-raising events. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE FOUNDATION 760-730-1471 cvdf.org The Cardiovascular Disease Foundation was established to help people benefit from the great strides made in the treatment, detection and prevention of cardiac and vascular diseases. Volunteers are needed to help in all areas, including health screenings, lectures, office support, fund-raising activities, community events, public promotion, advertising, Internet research, writing, editing and public speaking. CASA CORNELIA LEGAL CENTER 619-231-7788 casacornelia.org Casa Cornelia Law Center is a public-interest law firm providing quality legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations, with a primary commitment to indigent persons within the immigrant community in Southern California. Opportunities exist for volunteer attorneys, interpreters and law students. Internships are available. CASA DE AMPARO 760-754-5500 casadeamparo.org Casa de Amparo provides safe shelter and a continuum of prevention and treatment services to abused, neglected and at-risk infants, children and teens and their families in San Diego County. Volunteers are utilized in many areas, including one-on-one interaction with the children such as reading to a preschool class or leading an exercise class, preparing snacks, serving as a role model or assisting in the administrative office. CENTER FOR COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS 760-747-6282, extension 123 ccssd.org Since 1969, the Center for Community Solutions has been helping to create safe and healthy communities with a core emphasis on the treatment and prevention of sexual assault and relationship violence. Volunteers may work as advocates, assist in the legal clinic or help with special events and projects. Some positions require additional training or education. Opportunities are available in North County as well as central San Diego. CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION 858-866-0959 challengedathletes.org The Challenged Athletes Foundation was created on the belief that people of all abilities should have the opportunity to pursue a life full of physical activity and sports. Volunteers help in a variety of capacities, which include providing technical expertise and assisting with special events. CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION 858-578-2945 cff.org The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. Volunteers help with events, committee work and mailing newsletters, invitations and brochures. DRESS FOR SUCCESS: SAN DIEGO 619-281-3773 dressforsuccess.org Dress for Success helps low-income women make tailored transitions into the workforce and provides ongoing support to help clients build successful careers. Volunteers help by becoming personal shoppers, providing professional services and organizing fund-raisers. |
