Malarkey in the Kitchen, a San Diegan in Washington, and Kids in Their Place |

THE GETAWAY: Those of us with long memories may recall a time when we had an inferiority complex about living in the shadow of Los Angeles. Long gone. San Diego’s Thomas K. Arnold spent the night in Santa Monica Tuesday night, and, during check-in at his hotel, he perused the rack of tourist brochures in the lobby. The first three attractions, in order: The San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and Legoland.
THE GROUNDED EAR: Has Brian Malarkey, whose culinary prowess and national TV exposure have made him San Diego’s most celebrated chef, been permanently replaced as executive chef at Oceanaire Seafood Room? A press release from the popular Gaslamp Quarter restaurant’s PR agency late yesterday announced the naming of former sous chef Sean Langlais as “interim executive chef.” The release says the appointment follows Malarkey taking a leave of absence (paternity leave) a few weeks ago, but says nothing about when or whether Malarkey will return ... Borrego Ranch Resort, opened 50 years ago by the Copley newspaper family as La Casa del Zorro and sold two years ago to a new owner, has a new attitude, too. And it’s looking for a new clientele, apparently. A review at TripAdvisor.com notes the target market is “young, hip, L.A.” But not too young. No children allowed ... Newest high-concept eatery coming up soon in the East Village: Homie’s on 10th Avenue — an unlikely mixture of cinnamon rolls, a pet café and roller-skating rink. And a front man with the unlikely name of Butch Rose.
PARENTAL GUIDANCE: Yes, not all children are blessed with rocket scientists for parents. But don’t most parents exercise good old common sense? Apparently not, judging from the photo of one of Mission Valley Center’s courtesy baby strollers, below.
