Way to Get Better-looking

Local Jewelry Designer
The SOL designs by Heidi at Blondstone (925 Prospect Street, La Jolla, 858-456-1994, and 4931 Newport Avenue, Ocean Beach, 619-223-2563; blondstone.com) are a line of sterling silver jewelry that reflects an upscale, beachy vibe, perfect for San Diego. She uses sparkly sea glass, also known as mermaid tears, and seashells to create earrings, rings, necklaces and eye-catching bracelets.

Milan Makeover
European and U.S. fashion veteran Maggie Bobileff believes a man should do more than stuff a stiff shirt each day. At Mister B (7925 Girard Avenue, Suite B, La Jolla, 858-454-3310; misterbclothing .com), she strives to lighten and brighten the American man’s stodgy sartorial sensibilities with high-end fashions that are classy yet playful. Bobileff says clothes should be appropriate for both the office and a bit of early-evening carousing.

Yoga Wear
Adventure shorts, response shorts, endurance, speed and spin shorts——just about every pair of shorts you have and have not thought of——are available at Lululemon Athletica (1237 Camino del Mar, Del Mar, 858 847 9435). The chain of more than 50 stores specializes in “yoga wear,” clothing made from material that wicks away sweat so you can feel cool and focused during workouts. Pants come in lengths and tops come in number sizes so you don’t have to wear baggy sweats and feel burdened by ugliness on your journey to Zen.

Green Spa
Eastern ideas, Western technology and an organic, fragrant product line make Sara Elizabeth (4026 Hawk Street, Suite H, 619- 977-7546; saraelizabethskincare .com) a standout spa. Sara is known for her personalized service and natural treatments such as the vegan hand and foot rituals, a divine manicure and pedicure sans the smelly chemicals.

Women’s Boutique
When it comes to fashion, there’s a saying that San Diego is a year behind Los Angeles, and L.A. is a year behind Europe. But Gracie Mahvi, founder of a boutique chain with five San Diego stores, is a fashion-forward thinker who finds contemporary styles that rise above trends. Check out the sales online or visit the Gracie outlet boutique (6635 Flanders Drive, Suite A-B, 858-623-9220; graciebtq.com) for designer brands such as Joie, Burning Torch and True Religion.

Dentist
If you must get a crown, especially in the front, it’s important to find a specialist who won’t leave you looking like you have white opaque Chiclets for teeth. Dr. Jiyoung Kim (2235 Encinitas Boulevard, Suite 100, Encinitas, 760-753-9052; jkimdds.com) completed advanced studies in prosthodontics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and though she still looks like a teenager, she’s an expert at replacing damaged or missing teeth. Other dentists in town recommend her for difficult jobs.

Hair Salon
Salon owner Ryan Thomas (1031 South Coast Highway, Encinitas, 760-436-4247) asks you to describe your relationship with your hair. “There have been rebellious partings and frightening fallouts,” you say. “I’m afraid it’s over between us.” “I am not afraid,” says Thomas, as he trims sections of hair at odd angles, combs gently and snips again. After paying his $100 fee, you slink out the door and head for the privacy of your bathroom mirror. The reflection reveals a younger-looking, sexier version of your former self. You turn your head and your hair swings. Suddenly, you don’t feel one bit guilty about blowing a Cnote on a haircut.

$10 Manicure
A fast and professional manicure can be had at Lena Nails (1770 Kettner Boulevard, 619-702-7411). There are more than 100 colors of polish to choose from and a stack of glamour mags to peruse, and the Little Italy location takes walk-ins. It’s the perfect place to include when planning a girls’ day out.
