Retro Accents
From vintage crystal doorknobs and stained glass to distressed pewter hinges, Architectural Salvage in Little Italy (2401 Kettner Boulevard, 619-696-1313; architecturalsalvagesd.com) is the place to scout for domestic accents. “Hardware really is the jewelry of the house,” says owner Elizabeth Scalice. “It’s like finishing off a simple black dress. It just makes all the difference.”

Landscape Artist
Trish Kydd’s motto is “A gardener is an artist who paints the world with flowers.” She loves to transform an ordinary landscape into a personalized verdant oasis, with easy-to-care-for plants and creative accessories. For a decade, she owned Anderson’s La Costa Nursery before launching Trish’s Secret Garden (1236 Urania Avenue, Encinitas, 760-634-1462; secretgardenlandscaping.com), devoted to building themed gardens.

Nursery Center Staff
Whether searching for a coral pink Barbara Bush rose or a lavender Barbra Streisand, you’ll find it with help from the friendly and knowledgeable staff at Walter Andersen Nursery (3642 Enterprise Street, 619-224-8271, and 12755 Danielson Court, Poway, 858-513-4900; walterandersen.com). Since 1928, the family-owned nursery has provided one of the best selections of plants and supplies in the county. Got a gardening stumper? E-mail your question to a Walter Andersen expert.

Carpet Cleaner
Ten years, kids, dogs, cats and spaghetti sauce can take their toll on white Berber carpeting. But Greg Fry at Fry’s Carpet Cleaning (1240 Eolus Avenue, Encinitas, 760-753-2763) can make it stainfree in no time. He’s fast, honest and reasonable, plus he has a special steam-cleaning machine that gets out ground-in dirt.

Way to Make Lemonade from the Mortgage Meltdown
There are bank-owned bargains to mine from the rocky real estate market, if you know where and how to look. Every second Saturday, the REPO Express bus tour rolls from Hillcrest on an educational tour of cherry-picked properties in downtown San Diego, North Park, University Heights and elsewhere. Get a pulse on the market from the pros at the Coshow Real Estate Group (1439 University Avenue, 619-246-6807; coshowrealestategroup.com).

Carpet Cleaning
You won't regret calling them! This was the first time I have ever had our carpet cleaned so I really wasn't sure who to call or what to expect. I called Troy at TNT Carpet Care(619-208-2708)after reading the reviews on Kudzu and am so happy that I did! We have three children who don't always take off their shoes or put them on for that matter so you can just imagine the dirt that gets dragged onto the carpet. After Troy finished cleaning it, it came out just like new! It’s been a month since he cleaned it and it's still looking good! I will definitely use them in the future and highly recommend them to anyone needing their carpet cleaned. Thank you for a wonderful job!
