Pachyderms, Poetry and Ponders
The African elephant is the world’s largest land animal, one scientists know little about. But Caitlin O’Connell’s new book, The Elephant’s Secret Sense: The Amazing Hidden Life of the Wild Herds of Africa (Free Press, $24), sheds some light on the topic. O’Connell, a San Diegan, codirects the nonprofit organization Utopia Scientific, which promotes elephant conservation and scientific understanding worldwide. The Elephant’s Secret Sense is a fascinating, poignant look at the complexities of elephant relationships, as well as the difficulties facing the people who struggle to survive alongside them. O’Connell’s 14 years of research led her to the discovery that elephants can communicate seismically——by sensing and recognizing far-reaching calls through the ground. She first noticed it after a chance encounter with a grazing elephant outside her bedroom window in Namibia. The elephant, startled by O’Connell’s presence, ran off on tiptoes, something that mystified her. The book is a fascinating account of her research and life among the elephants.
The Best of Border Voices (Level 4 Press, $24.95), edited by Jack Webb, is a collection of poems by renowned poets, students and poetry enthusiasts worldwide who have participated in the Border Voices poetry program in San Diego, a project directed by Webb. Also new from Jamul-based publisher Level 4 Press is Why Things Are ($24.95) by William Roetzheim, which explains something known as complexity theory and shows how it can answer some of life’s toughest questions. Roetzheim, a San Diegan, has published 17 books on management and technology.
