Inside the Candy Factory: On October 21, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Studio E Architects invites you inside the rehabilitated Candy Factory and Scheifer & Sons building for a lecture presented by the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. San Diego’s East Village was once populated by hundreds of masonry commercial structures, most of which were demolished during downtown’s recent building boom. Fortunately, these two structures—a former candy factory and a manufacturing facility—have been preserved and given new purpose. Today, both buildings, which face Petco Park’s Park at the Park and feature views onto the Padres’ field, now house offices on the upper levels, retail and restaurant space on the ground levels. During the lecture, Studio E will discuss work on the buildings, which included seismic upgrades, restoration of the historic fa - çades, the inclusion of a new exiting and circulation system and other contemporary interventions. 371 Eighth Avenue, East Village. Make reservations by e-mailing archichat@aiasandiego.org.

Full Circle: The San Diego Horticultural Society presents a lecture on one of today’s most talked-about natural resources: bamboo. On October 13 at 6, Bob Dimattia, owner of Pura Vida Tropical Nursery, discusses the history of bamboo, its prospects and the benefits it presents for today and beyond. A bamboo specialist with more than 30 years of experience growing and studying the tropical plant, Dimattia first encountered bamboo in the 1970s while stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Since then he has passionately grown and used bamboo, including his specialty, the giant clumper. He has developed successful propagation methods and has helped introduce and establish some of the rare clumpers into Southern California with help of the American Bamboo Society. Admission is free for members, $5 for nonmembers. The lecture takes place at Surfside Race Place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. For more information, contact 760-295-7089 or www.sdhortsoc.org.
