A better night’s rest awaits you at the stylish bed-and-linens store and showroom
La Jolla’s Everett Stunz has been a elegant presence on Girard Avenue since 1963, founded by, yes, a man named Everett Stunz, known for his innovative adjustable bed. Since then, the store has moved only once, hopping a few storefronts.
Nicki and Phil Coller bought the place in September 2005 with big plans. They recently celebrated the grand opening of a new showroom, still on Girard. The airy space—redone by California Builders & Remodeling on Morena Boulevard—is 35 percent bigger, with tall glass windows visible from the avenue’s intersection with Torrey Pines Road, where 30,000 vehicles pass daily.
“Girard is becoming known as a design district,” says Phil, who handles back-room operations while Nicki runs the store. Formerly, Phil had a construction business building tunnels. Back then, he traveled to more than 140 countries—often with his family. “Our kids were born in South Africa, Singapore and New Jersey!” he says with a laugh.
La Jolla, however, is home. The six Coller children attended school here and have settled in the area. “We wanted a business that really anchored us in the community,” Phil says.
The expanded store has a much clearer arrangement. In front is a complete showroom, a store within a store, for the exclusive Swedish Dux bed line. A separate area displays the Everett Stunz adjustable-bed line. Also on view is a high-low bed that can be raised up for people being attended to by a nurse or physician.
In the center is a lovely boutique: silk pajamas and lingerie from Treesha, robes from DreamSack, bath accessories from Labrazel, and more. There is a section for babies’ linens, robes and towels. Luxury linens from Sferra Bros., Peacock Alley and La Signoria, towels and down items are grouped at the back.
A special area has been set aside for design consultations. Customers receive personal service from knowledgeable staffers such as sales manager Cori Faulkner, who has been with the store for 17 years. Interior designers shop at Everett Stunz, as well.
“We do only bedrooms,” Phil says. “It’s a very personal touch for this private area.”
