Woo and Merritt downplay their homes showcase qualityeven though its been on several popular home tours and was covered in a major bungalow magazine. To them, its a place to be filled with family and tranquility; a place where they can relax and be creative.
The couples latest passion is a local nonprofit they founded in 2004, the Design Innovation Institute. The mission is to advance quality at all levels of design and to promote environmental awareness through greater use of green products. Its a collaborative think tank of design professionals, educators and like-minded persons. Currently, Woo and Merritt are seeking funding and a terrific locationfor one of the main goals: establishment of an all-encompassing design museum.
The institute is in its infancy, but on the road to advancing design educational programming, creating databanks of experimental design research and offering student scholarships. Such vision is far-reaching and progressive, just as the Craftsman movement once was.
Woo and Merritt may live in a hundred-year-old home, but they also live for a better tomorrow through better design.
