How lucky we are to live in San Diego
DR. SAN DIEGO
Bear with me for a moment while I express my real thrill at becoming America’s Finest City’s finest magazine’s newest blogger!
That’s right, after more than three decades “making psychology public” on radio and television right here in our fabulous city, I have a new arena in which to bring San Diegans the latest useful psychology information to make life a bit easier and more joy-filled.
I’ll fill sandiegomagazine.com with practical, entertaining, sometimes humorous and always personal insights, on a myriad of topics aimed at enhancing your well-being.
And it shouldn’t be too difficult to write about emotional and physical well-being. After all, we live in San Diego — the only city I know of that can rightfully claim being the target of “city envy.”
Here’s an experiment you can try that never fails for me, proving the point of what “city envy” is all about. Carry a copy of San Diego Magazine with you on any flight going anywhere in America, and inevitably a fellow passenger will see it and ask, “You live in San Diego?” Then he or she will ask where you live in town, and of course will then tell you about the time they visited our hometown, finishing with how envious they are that you live here.
Envy, it’s been said, is the art of counting the other fellow’s blessings instead of your own. Pity those folks who live here and still suffer. After all, everything comes out the same, no matter whether you make it hard on yourself or not.
So, next time you get down about anything, remember: You live in the finest city in America — the only city that is the target of “city envy.” And whether rich or poor, view of the glorious Pacific or of your next-door neighbor’s apartment, new car or no car, Whole Foods or little food, Plutarch taught us well: “Learn to be pleased with everything; with wealth, so far as it makes us beneficial to others; with poverty, for not having much to care for; and with obscurity, for being unenvied.”
After all, we live in San Diego.
For more than 30 years, Dr. Mantell has successfully been bringing upbeat, friendly and helpful psychological insights to individuals, families and businesses in San Diego as a clinical and corporate psychologist in private practice. He's been a regular on Good Morning America, KFMB-TV News 8, has appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, the Today show, authored two best-selling books and speaks regularly for audiences throughout the country.

What a terrific idea and a fabulous choice for Dr. San Diego! This guy has a lot of cutting edge insights and a real zest for joyful living. Dr. San Diego makes a keen observation about San Diego and how lucky we are to be living in America's Finest City. Certainly puts things in perspective. I look forward to visiting this blog frequently to enjoy more up to the minute insights!
I enjoyed reading Dr. San Diego's new blog and contemplating the phenomenon of "City Envy". My wife and I live in Atlanta and consider it a lovely part of the Country. But to put a spin on the old expression about New York: "Atlanta is a great place to live but you wouldn't want to visit there". We have nothing of deep meaningfulness for the out-of-town/state visitor. Sure there's an aquarium and the Coke Museum and lots of nice, older tree-lined neighborhoods and blah, blah, blah but that's about it. And our summer weather is really hot and humid - if you're outside past 10:30AM, you become a damp sponge.
San Diego, on the other hand, has perfect summer weather and for that alone it earns my appreciation and/or envy. We summered there for many years as guests of my parents and there was always something wonderful to tour and something exciting going on. On returning to Atlanta I would present friends with tins of "Dr. Zog's Sex Wax". Always keep 'em guessing.
So, keep up the good work Doc. The rest of manking deserves to know about your little corner of Heaven.
