BOOKSHELF
Love Triangle; Food Pyramid
San Diego writer Caitlin Rother’s new book, Twisted Triangle (Jossey-Bass, $26.95), relates the true story of Margo Bennett, an FBI agent who had an affair with best-selling author Patricia Cornwell. Bennett was kidnapped by her jealous husband, also an FBI agent, and nearly killed. The story was widely reported in the late 1990s, but Bennett gave Rother ——a Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist and former investigative reporter with The San Diego Union-Tribune——unprecedented access, including hours of interviews and personal papers, photographs and legal documents. The result is a vivid, detailed retelling of Bennett’s disintegrating marriage, her affair, the kidnapping and its aftermath.
A new way to lose weight is outlined in SuperFoods Rx Diet (Rodale Books, $24.95) by San Diego doctor of public health and dietician Wendy Bazilian, owner of Bazilian’s Health Clinic, and Del Mar–based Steven Pratt, a senior staff ophthalmologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital. (The book was written with New York–based health and medical writer Kathy Matthews.) SuperFoods dispenses with the business of balancing proteins, fats and carbs and instead focuses on the benefits of micronutrients——vitamins, minerals, bioflavonoids, fiber, antioxidants and other substances that burn calories. The authors identify 14 “SuperFoods” they say boost metabolism, and provide readers with useful menus, meals and recipes.
